History of the Green Fair
Believe it or not but Swansea's Green Fair started way back in 1983, and has been held every year (bar two) since! In the first few years the Fair was held in venues such as St James church hall, the Patti Pavilion and the old exchange buildings, promoting local green groups, campaigns, local producers and crafters. Back then it was originally organised by the Swansea Green Group, and then the local Friends Of The Earth group.
When the Environment Centre opened in 1995, the responsibility of organising the event was handed over, and the Centre was used as a venue for the Fair for a few years. Popularity grew and more green organisations wanted to attend the Green Fair. In 2001 the event moved back to the Patti Pavilion where there was plenty of room to expand and the Co-operative Group sponsored the event for a few years.
In 2005 the Patti Pavilion closed for refurbishment and so the Green Fair organisers were on the hunt for a new venue... and it just so happened that the multi-million pound National Waterfront Museum had recently opened. The Museum staff were more than happy to accommodate the Green Fair and were keen to support the local community.
One of the keys to the success of the Green Fair is that it has never forgotten its roots, it has continued to support local environmental groups, helps the public to take action on environmental issues and gives consumers an alternative local and sustainable choice to global mass produced goods. We'd like to thank everybody who has been involved over the years for making it such a fantastic event and for helping to raise funds for the Environment Centre, a local independent Registered Charity.
