Defiance Ride: Easter Monday 6th April 2015

On Easter Monday in 1885, a momentous event took place in south west Wales. For the very first time, a modern, chain-driven bicycle was ridden all the way from Glanaman in the Amman Valley to Swansea and back. No-one had seen anything like it before, and thousands of people came out to line the route to see the strange machine pass by.

The bicycle was manufactured by William and Arthur Williams who had set up in business founding the Defiance Cycle Works at their farm, Gelli Fawnen, overlooking Glanaman in the Amman Valley. This was the first – and only – cycle manufacturing company ever in Wales.

Easter Monday in 1885 was on the 6th April, and Easter Monday 2015 is once more on the 6th April. So we are celebrating the 130th anniversary to the day of this unique piece of history by organising a ride from Gelli Fawnen Farm to Swansea and back, retracing as much as possible the original route taken by Arthur Williams on his historic ride.

The ride is approximately 36 miles in total and is a Cyclists’ Touring Club (CTC) event. It is not a sportive, or a race, but a touring ride to be enjoyed at leisure on a mix of roads, quiet country lanes and traffic-free cycle paths. You can even do the ride in period costume – if you wish!

The entry fee is £15. This includes lunch and free bottled water. A commemorative mug will also be presented to all participants
All proceeds after expenses will be donated to “Hafan Dementia Care, Glanaman”. If you would like to raise extra money for Hafan Dementia Care by sponsorship you can. Book and find out more at www.defiancecycleride.com

Fairtrade Fortnight 2015: 23rd February to 8th March

Members of Swansea Fair Trade Forum have put together an exciting programme of events for this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight. Events include coffee mornings, tea parties, walks and a seminar. FT14 will then culminate in a celebration event at the National Waterfront Museum. Download the programme HERE

Swansea is celebrating 20 years of Fairtrade Fortnight!
Over the past 20 years, together we’ve made the Fairtrade mark the biggest and best known ethical label in the UK. But we know there is still a long way to go to make all trade fair – just 1.2% of cocoa and less than 10% of tea globally is traded on Fairtrade terms.
This Fairtrade Fortnight 2015 the spotlight will be on the producers who grow the products we love, especially cocoa, sugar, and tea growers. By sharing their stories, we can show the dramatic difference that choosing Fairtrade makes.

During Fairtrade Fortnight the forum and its members are putting on a range of local events. Many events are FREE and with such a wide selection, there will be something for everyone!
